It’s a fact that around 80 percent of e-mail traffic – equivalent to 6.5 billion messages a day – is junk mail or spam.

Increasingly, hackers and spammers have taken to using networks of compromised PCs infected by malware (software designed to damage computer systems) to distribute spam e-mail.

The use of these networks (often called botnets) is designed to make it harder to filter e-mail traffic for junk mail simply by blocking rogue e-mail addresses linked to spammers.
